I recently had a fantastic stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan in Yamagata. The value for money was excellent, with spacious rooms that comfortably accommodated a group of nine. The attention to detail was impressive, from the beautiful shoji doors to the private toilet and bathroom with two sinks. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel like a part of their family. I particularly enjoyed the traditional breakfast, where I had the opportunity to learn about the ryokan's history and even participate in mochi-making. The location was also great, with easy access to nearby temples and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
No improvements needed, everything was perfect!

What an amazing stay I had in this traditional Japanese-style hotel. the hospitality shown by the staff was incredible, making the stay super comfortable. the location is perfect, not too far from the station and with great views of the city. the hot springs were amazing, both indoor and outdoor, offering a traditional onsen experience. the food was also something special and had a variety of options. I particularly enjoyed the pork shabu shabu with huge servings of vegetables and the delicious hotel-made mochi served for breakfast.
There were not many negative aspects of this hotel. the only downside was that there was not much to do or see around the hotel, except for some nearby footbaths.

The location of this traditional ryokan is ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The hotel offers a free shuttle service for convenience and the nearby supermarket provides easy access to any essentials. The rooms are spacious, with a large tatami room and private toilet. The onsen is a highlight, especially the outdoor "Rotenburo" carved from a single rock. The friendly staff speaks enough English to make guests feel welcome and the traditional matcha service upon check-in adds a nice touch. The breakfast is a unique experience, with a choice between a communal mochi-making session or a traditional Japanese breakfast.
There are no non-smoking rooms available, which might be a downside for guests sensitive to smoke.
